The Tenerife airport disaster occurred on March 27, 1977 and killed nearly 600 people. The plane was ready for takeoff but then a thick fog gathered on the runway depriving the pilot visibility.

The pilot made a huge mistake as he began takeoff without clearance from the tower not realizing other plane was on the same runway. A few who survived were left to tell the tale. It was sad that the arrogance of a pilot lead to the loss of so many lives that day.
