#8. Reykjavik, Iceland

To get the perfect view of the lights in Iceland by making a point of leaving the night life of the city and head out into the wide open plains of Þingvellir National Park. This site is where the North American and Eurasian continental plates meet to cause a rift valley.

They can be experienced during the winter time, especially on those clear, crisp nights, where they appear in a variety of colors and intensity, either twirling gently in shades of milky green, or occasionally blazing in a wild and multi-colored dance across the night sky. Though the show lasts for 12-15 minutes, it is worth your time. The best time to view the Aurora Borealis is from October till March as the lights are affected by cloud cover, moonlight, and urban light pollution.
